• A marine insurance firm requested that we examine the electrical system on a 70'+ sportsfishing boat that had sustained lightning damage. It had subsequently been worked on by several firms to repair the damage. However, concerns remained about the integrity of the vessel's DC electrical system and the engine control system. The vessel's DC electrical system cabling was not the problem as suspected by the owner, instead problems with engine linkage, battery charger adjustment and the engine control system were pinpointed by our examination. • A well known power boat manufacturing firm requested Jim inspect the electrical system on one of their new boats where the boat purchaser believed the boat was unsafe. The boat was examined and found to be electrically safe and wired to ABYC, NFPA and USCG Standards. Added vessel accessory power draw was identified as requiring good power management to prevent battery depletion. • The new owners of a 50'+ motor yacht, built in 1975, had us conduct a Vessel Electrical Survey and Inspection of the vessel. Our survey identified a significant number of problems resulting from piecemeal changes and age. The majority of these problems required changes in the vessel's electrical systems for safety. • Managers of a medium size marina had us perform a corrosion survey to determine the presence of "stray current corrosion" impacting sacrifical anodes on vessels in a section of the marina. • Several marine surveyors contact Jim with technical questions on vessel electrical system problems. A recent request concerned rewiring that had been done by two different contractors to the transformer on an older Hatteras Yacht. Information provided addressed safety and galvanic isolation concerns.. • The owner of a marine electrical service firm in another state regularly contacts Jim for information on marine system standards and solutions to complex wiring problems. The information and services we provide always follow the standards established by the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC), National Marine Electronic Association (NMEA), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and US Coast Guard.
